$2.25 million for hospital negligence of interest to New York

Hospitals are typically the place people will go when they have been in an accident or are concerned about severe pain. These patients fully expect hospital personnel to take whatever steps are necessary to relieve their pain and speed them on the road to recovery. New York residents who believe they have received substandard medical care may be interested in a recent jury award to the family of a New Mexico woman who was the victim of hospital negligence and died as a result.

In November 2008, the victim visited her local emergency room. She was experiencing stomach pains and the underlying cause was diagnosed by hospital personnel. She was then transferred to another hospital where she was treated and released about a week later.

A few days later, still complaining of stomach pains, she returned to her local hospital where she was admitted and treated for about a week. When she was released from the hospital, she was given pain medication; however, she was not given antibiotics to treat the infection causing her problem. Additionally, at the time she was released, she was still suffering from fever and oxygen-related problems. She died within 24 hours of being released from the hospital.

Her grief-stricken family filed suit against the hospital for hospital negligence. New York residents who may find themselves in a similar situation could find it interesting to know that a New Mexico jury has recently awarded this victim's family $2.25 million as a result of her death and damages. This jury award will not lessen the family's grief, but it will help financially as they recover from this tragic loss.
