A prescription error may be more likely with pharmacy techs

Prescription medications are an integral part of the recovery process and treatment for a variety of ailments and illnesses. Most New York residents pick up their medication from the pharmacy, head home and take the medicine as stated on the instructions without another thought about it. However, pharmacies are known to make a prescription error every now and then, resulting in the wrong drug or wrong dosage, which can cause serious harm to the patient.

At many pharmacies, there is only one pharmacist on duty. The others that work in the pharmacy are consultants and technicians. These individuals do not have the same training as pharmacists, although technicians are permitted to perform virtually the same tasks as a trained and certified pharmacist.

Some believe this may be the reason for many of the prescription errors. Now, it would appear that states like Florida are aiming to add a few more pharmacy technicians per pharmacist at each pharmacy. If this occurs across the country, and many of the errors really do stem from the technicians, then the number of prescription errors could dramatically increase.

When a prescription error occurs in New York, it is important that the responsible party -- whether a pharmacist or pharmacy technician -- be held liable for the harm that they caused. In many instances, the wrong drug or wrong dosage could be lethal. Instead of simply brushing the mistake off, New York patients may need to take the necessary legal actions to hold the medical professional accountable for his or her negligent actions and fight to recover fair compensation.
