Woman awarded $12M after surgical mistake affected her life

New York residents may be interested in hearing about a woman who was recently awarded $12 million by a jury in a medical malpractice lawsuit in another state. The jury took more than three hours to deliberate. Ultimately, the jury came to the conclusion that the surgeon had indeed been negligent and made a surgical mistake.

Apparently, the 65-year-old woman had gone into the hospital to have a hernia removed. What should have been a routine operation turned into a disaster afterward. It was discovered after she had been closed up and taken off the operating table that her colon had been punctured.

This surgical mistake, which occurred in 2008, caused her to suffer numerous injuries. She was in a coma for an entire month after going into septic shock and having a heart attack. She suffered an infection in her abdominal area. She lost the majority of her large intestine. In addition, she had to be put under the knife several more times.

The woman in this case continues to have problems. She is unable to digest food properly. She also suffers from abdominal issues that make it hard for her to move effectively.

Thankfully, this woman received a substantial award for the negligence of her medical provider. This money will likely help her cover any ongoing medical expenses that are necessary after such an unfortunate and tragic surgical mistake. When a victim in New York suffers a surgical mistake made by a physician, they have the same rights as this woman and can pursue a legal claim in a civil court. This may result in them being awarded monetary damages like this woman while also holding the surgeon responsible for any negligent actions in the operating room.
