Nursing negligence leads to $650,000 settlement for family

When hospital negligence occurs in New York, it can be extremely harmful for many reasons. One such reason is because sometimes the harm that is caused can be virtually irreversible. In some cases, health care professionals have one chance to make the right decision regarding a patient's health. When that decision is made without proper care, it can have a devastating effect on a person. This was the case with a recent transplant procedure when nursing negligence affected the entire process.

Roughly two years ago, a 24-year-old woman went in for a routine kidney transplant. The patient's brother was allowing his kidney to be surgically removed from his body and placed in his sister's. Unfortunately, this transplant never happened.

The woman was put to sleep. When she woke up, she found out that she never received a kidney transplant. The surgery had never occurred.

The reason behind this is rather alarming. Apparently, one of the nurses in the operating room had thrown out the brother's healthy kidney by accident. Luckily, the woman did receive a kidney transplant at a later date.

However, because of the nurse's negligence, the woman and her family filed a lawsuit against the hospital for medical negligence. The family eventually agreed to a $650,000 settlement with the hospital. An Ohio court recently approved this settlement.

Because of the nursing negligence that occurred at this hospital, this patient could have potentially died as a result of not receiving the kidney transplant as scheduled. If this scenario had occurred, the hospital would most likely have had to pay a much larger sum of money to the family. When patients in New York receive substandard care and are injured as a result, they may have the legal right to sue the hospital or any person involved for their damages and suffering.
